Our framework can grow and adapt as the community evolves, ensuring long-term sustainability and relevance.

Our Role

AI² Role & Responsibilities

Stewardship

AI² provides stewardship of a portfolio of initiatives that collectively fuel the adoption of safe and ethical AI in Ireland under our core pillars: Education and Literacy, Advocacy, Safe and Trustworthy AI, and Adoption.

Build Community

We build a community that ensures broad representation of all stakeholders in civil society in determination of priorities, decisions, policies, funding and initiatives.

Collaboration

We embrace the principles of Open Source Communities and work collaboratively with stakeholder groups (especially academia and government) to prompt the alignment of legislation, regulation, civil society, ethics and commerce.

Our Focus

AI² Pillars

Education and Literacy

  • Developing sector-specific AI training programs that equip professionals with practical skills and knowledge relevant to their industry context, from healthcare practitioners to retail managers
  • Creating public awareness campaigns and workshops that demystify AI for citizens, helping them understand both opportunities and implications of AI in their daily lives
  • Establishing certification frameworks and competency standards that validate AI literacy across different organisational roles and sectors

Advocacy

  • Engaging with policymakers and regulators to ensure Ireland's AI governance frameworks support innovation while protecting citizens' rights and interests
  • Building coalitions across sectors to amplify collective voices on AI-related issues, from data privacy to workforce transitions
  • Promoting Ireland as a leading destination for responsible AI development and deployment through international forums and partnerships

Safe and Trustworthy AI

  • Developing practical risk assessment tools and ethical guidelines that organisations can adapt to their specific contexts and use cases
  • Creating incident reporting and learning systems that allow sectors to share experiences and best practices around AI safety challenges
  • Establishing verification and audit processes that help organisations demonstrate their AI systems meet safety, fairness, and transparency standards

Adoption

The Adoption pillar encompasses three key sub-areas that work together to accelerate AI implementation across all sectors of Irish society.

Adoption Sub-Pillars

Academic Partnerships

  • Establishing collaborative research programs that pair academic researchers with industry, government, and civil society organisations to address real-world AI challenges and opportunities
  • Creating knowledge transfer mechanisms such as secondments, joint labs, and shared research facilities that facilitate the flow of AI expertise between academia and practice
  • Developing proof-of-concept projects and pilot studies that demonstrate the practical viability of academic AI research for specific sectoral applications

Enterprise and Startup Ecosystem

  • Providing mentorship programs and technical support that help startups navigate AI development challenges while connecting them with potential partners and investors
  • Creating roadmaps and implementation frameworks for AI adoption and collaboration tailored to different business sizes and sectors, from SMEs to large enterprises
  • Facilitating access to AI talent, technology platforms, and funding opportunities through networking events, accelerator programs, and partnership brokering

Public and Community Sector

  • Supporting government agencies in developing AI strategies and implementation plans that improve public service delivery while maintaining transparency and accountability
  • Helping nonprofits and community organisations identify AI applications that can enhance their social impact, from service delivery to resource optimization
  • Creating shared AI infrastructure and collaborative platforms that allow smaller public sector and community organisations to access AI capabilities they couldn't develop independently
